We are going to do some awesome projects: weave a scarf, bracelets, necklaces, hula hoop wall hanging, and more!  And don’t worry, we will be making our own looms for a lifetime of weavings!  As a youngin’….I was obsessed with weaving and I am excited to share some of my favorite projects.

Inspired by our past Fairy classes & taught by Athens favorite Karen Sweeney Gerow of normaltownlab.tumblr.com, we are gonna make fairies, fairy shelters, fairy picnic areas, fairy hot air balloons, fairy parachutes, fairy caves… you name it, we can do it! Every day is fairy day this week. We will end with a tea party for us and our creations.

Impromp3bles: Creativity Camp for 7-12 yr. olds; 12-3pm

Story-telling ain’t just for adults! Hop in on the fun as we play together to create a team story-telling game. These impromptu fables not only encourage flexible creativity, but also provoke playful self-reflection by the kids.Your children will build a game whose parts can be expanded and even traded amongst friends. Sign-up to discover the fun behind the silly name.(Warning for parents: Prepare your mental flexibility as your children will certainly want you to play the game with them when they bring it home!)

It’s time to explore everything that’s not flat! Make sculpture, learn about different artists and methods, create 3-dimensional dwellings, try paper mache, explore materials, and more!

Have you ever wanted to make your own movie? With your digital camera and any art material you too can create your very own story! Not just for techies — anyone can do this! Make your flipbook come to life. We’ll have a party and celebrate with a screening on Friday.

July 9 - July 13
Creative Play for 3-5 yr. olds; 9-11am

This one is geared toward the spirit of creative play. We’ll be focused on projects that are interactive and active. Remember how much fun hopscotch was, and ring around the rosy? In this camp we’ll sing and dance, play make believe with homemade costumes, and create craft projects that are interactive like instruments and games.


Intro to Knitting for 6-12 yr. olds; 12-3pm

This is a beginner course for all the future knitters out there. We will start with finger knitting, then make our own knitting needles, then we’ll get to knitting! Who knows, maybe you’ll have a whole outfit by the end? (:


July 16 - July 20
Beginning Bookmaking for 6-12 yr. olds; 9-11am

In this camp we’ll be creating a book using upcycled fabric, stitching, and basic bookbinding skills. We’ll look at artists books and learn about artists who make books as their work. Every artist needs a sketchbook and a zine, and we’re here to teach you how to make one! Each camper will go home with several books they made.

Social Sculpture & Intervention Camp for 6-12 yr. olds; 12-3pm

Have you ever looked at an empty parking lot and wanted to plant flowers? This is a whole new way to make art! Art isn’t just painting and drawing anymore, folks, and we’re taking it to the next level. Art can be a message and it can be interactive, sneaky, and fun! We’ll be designing and sending postcards to strangers, making messages in bottles and hiding them all around town, creating seed bombs, decorating empty spaces, and making secret treasure maps where there’s real treasure! Learn all of this and more in this camp that teaches you to the beauty of the everyday and the beauty you can put into it.

July 23 - July 27
Beginning Printmaking Camp for 6-12 yr. olds; 9-11am

Have you ever wanted to know how to create a pattern, make an edition of prints, or simply print a drawing you made? In this camp we’ll be creating prints using linoleum cutting, stencil-making, and monoprinting. Your child will go home with a portfolio af prints from each camper, and you’ll have a lot of art to inspire!

Intro to Sewing for 6-12 yr. olds; 12-3pm

Learn the basics of sewing in this camp that encourages skill, technique, creativity, and gives the kids the confidence to sew on their own!

July 30 - August 3

Yep, you heard right. We’re having SPACE CAMP! Put on your helmet and get ready to blast off, ‘cause we’re doing things like rocket-making, growing crystals, making astronaut ice cream, and learning about the moon and planets and stars!
August 6 - 10
Exploring craft: DIY projects
for 3-5 yr. olds; 9-11am
$125 includes snack & tshirt
Instructor: Hope Hilton

Using some of our favorite ideas as our jumping point, this week incorporates the use of being creative with what we already have. We will print photographs on leaves, make stamps and learn about printing patterns using cardboard and ink, make painted branch mobiles, and create & produce a project with cardboard, tape, and imagination.
August 6 - 10

TEACHER BIOS

Kristen Bach spent her earlier years getting to know the Midwest until moving South to Athens, Georgia where she has worked for R. Wood Studio and www.beautyeveryday.com. Following the birth of her daughter, Maypop, Kristen was inspired to open TREEHOUSE.kid&craft. She enjoys creating and curating a shop that inspires and promotes creativity and imagination. Kristen lives in a sweet little handmade home with her husband Josh, daughter, and their two dogs, Penelope and Willa.

Karen Sweeney Gerow is a Doctoral candidate at UGA in the Educational Psychology Department and mama to 2 amazing kids, Daisy and Clementine. When she’s not crafting, studying, or hangin’ with her family, she runs an awesome blog called www.normaltownlab.tumblr.com Pssst: The wee ones love her fairy class.
   
Hope Hilton is an artist, educator, curator, and writer who has exhibited, taught, and published internationally. She graduated with an MFA from Hunter College in NYC and teaches at Athens Tech and Treehouse. She’s made her home in a crooked house in Winterville, GA, with her husband Stewart and cat, Captain Herman. 

Brian Hitselberger is an artist living and working in Athens, Georgia. He has taught children at The Georgia Museum of Art and currently teaches at Gainesville State and The Art Institute of Atlanta. He’s exhibited internationally and is in the collection of several museums. What we love about him is his wit and charming presence. 

Garrett Jaeger is a doctoral student in the Gifted & Creative Education program at UGA. His path has taken him from studying play from a Buddhist tradition at Naropa University, to developmental psychology perspectives while living in San Francisco. Currently, he conducts research on and teaches how creativity is a conduit for our innate desire to play throughout the lifespan. More importantly, his laughter is contagious!

Catherine Moneyhun is an educator at Waseca Learning Environment. She studied at UGA and holds a degree in Classical Culture, then got her Master’s Degree at Brenau University in Early Childhood Education. Her interests are sewing, crafting, organizing, and volunteering at the Daily Co-op. She’s kind of totally amazing with kids.

Amanda Kapousouz is an artist and musician who made her home in Athens after moving from New York City. She has a BS from the College of Charleston in Elementary Education and teaches knitting and sewing here at TREEHOUSE. We’re so excited to have her this summer! Her interests involve music, making wares for Normal Variety, knitting, seeing, and creating in general. She’s super amazing at teaching tricky techniques and really inspires everyone she meets.

Zelda Speight is an [almost] esteemed graduate of UGA with a bachelor’s degree in both Science and Anthropology. She has created and taught art classes in Kenya as well as here at TREEHOUSE, and has a lot of camp exerience as a camp counselor. She’s interested in science, space, people, traveling, and public service, and she’s a wonderful new addition to our team. Her smile is contagious!
