The city I love…
I vividly recall the first time i visited Athens, GA. I was on a road trip from WI and came to Athens to see a show at the 40 Watt. I had no idea that it would be the place that I choose to live, buy a home, raise a family, and start a business. I had passed through many places from Washington State to Maine…. I spent just 2 days in Athens and knew that I would someday call it home.
8 years later…….I still have the same fondness for my community and city. I have met and formed friendships with so many amazing folks throughout the years and I treasure the quaintness and creative energy of Athens. We are so lucky.
That is why I am so disappointed in the thought of having a Walmart or any big box store move into our downtown. I keep thinking if there were a Walmart downtown 8 years ago, when I first visited Athens, would I have fallen in love with the city? Absolutely NOT!
Our downtown is the heart of our city. It should define who we are and represent our character and local charm. If we are consumed by chains, we are just like every other city.
If you love it here- ATHENS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!
